Sailfish Slam

 

OCTOBER 1 - 31, 2009

Visit the Sailfish Slam website. The Sailfish Slam is a citywide catch and release billfish competition headquartered at The City Marina in Downtown Charleston, SC. Anglers will convene at this facility on Wednesday, September 30 for the Captains' Meeting followed by a month long competition. The 2008 Sailfish Slam boasted 95 billfish releases in just three days, and this year is sure to be a record breaker!

The Sailfish Slam concludes on Saturday, October 31 with a Halloween Awards Party and Dinner at The City Marina complex and Salty Mike's.

HMY-Viking MegaDock Tournament

The 7th Annual HMY-Viking MegaDock Tournament Releases Big

CHARLESTON, SC - The HMY-Viking Megadock Billfishing Tournament wrapped up its 7th annual event setting a new Governor's Cup release record of 151 billfish releases. This is the third time the tournament has broken the record of the most releases in a series event, the last being 131 releases in 2006. A total of 74 boats and 450 anglers fished over a three day period, releasing 138 Sailfish, 5 Blue Marlin, and 8 White Marlin. This year's big winner was the boat Micabe. Based out of Charleston, SC, the 55' Jarrett Bay released 9 Sailfish for a total of 1800 points. Total tournament winnings for the boat came to $130,247.

Fishing in a close second with 1600 release points was the boat Miss Annie. During the event Captain Matt Rabanstine led his crew to release 8 Sailfish. Miss Annie's tournament winnings for their 2nd place finish totaled $75,157.

Other event winners include 1st place Dolphin weighing in at 42 lbs caught by Willy Bell on the boat Blue Sky. The 1st place Tuna winner, Billy Ingram of Charlotte, NC reeled in the 21.1 lbs fish from the boat Reel Passion. And the 1st place Wahoo, caught by Bobby Krivohlavek was caught from the boat Reel Hooker and weighed in at 59 lbs.

Honorable mentions include 1st place lady Angler, Kathy Baxley from the boat Flybuoy, 2nd place lady Angler, Tara Asbill aboard the Fin-Addict, and 3rd place lady Angler, Becca Wells aboard the Rameseas. Drew Nettles from the boat, Short People took home the Youth Angler award for his 20.9 lbs Dolphin.

This is the fourth year in a row the Megadock Tournament has had a waitlist of boats that want to fish the event.
